The ongoing Battles between Privacy and Facebook and who is looking out for you.

In the attempt to remove bogus Facebook accounts Fb deactivated thousands of legitimate FB users. Though they say they caught it in time they show how pervasive their link is in having this platform for gleaning your information to sell to commercial businesses.
If you think this is just a social network with altruistic motives you have not delved deeply enough into the psyche of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg.
It is described in one meeting as, “You don’t understand us,” Mr. Schrage insisted. "The company’s users,... were not worried about privacy.”" spoken by, “Facebook vice-president Elliott Schrage and a group of company lawyers and staff (who) met with the (Canadian) regulators in a large boardroom labeled The Canada Room"
A solution was reached in August 2010, after a world wide protest forced FB to reconsider their security position. Even though security was settled to the satisfaction of each party, Facebook went ahead and gave ““Open Graph … a new policy that allowed application developers to store indefinitely any information they obtained from Facebook user accounts. Previously, the data had to be disposed after 24 hours.”” Later FB reconsidered after pressure from the Commission to provide an opt out option.
Some other phrases that should concern us are located within this article are:
“That’s the connection advertisers are ultimately willing to pay billions for, and no one else comes close to the sprawling global network of friends housed in Facebook.”
"Its long-term value is based on something much more subtle and significant: the social network’s ability to influence – and to persuade users to part with reams of data about themselves, to reduce their own privacy."
“Mr. Zuckerberg left little doubt that the company won’t stop remaking the boundary lines of privacy.”
